The association

Our association - "Friends of the church of Sainte Marie du Mont" - aims to bring together a group of volunteers to maintain and restore the church of Our Lady of the Assumption of St. Marie du Mont.

This church, built in the 11th century, stands proudly in the middle of the village.  Over the centuries generations of parishoners have mobilised to maintain it and to transform it.  Since the 16th century it has been topped by a spectacular dome which has made it a truly exceptional building, classified as a historical monument since 1840.

The ravages of time and of war have undermined this historic structure, located not far from the D-Day landing beach, Utah Beach.  The stones of the bell tower have been eroded.  The upper parts of the tower are the most affected.  Starting with the lantern which supports the cross at the top of the tower, the dome, the cornice and down to the massive octagonal body of the tower.  The ironwork is also attacked by rust.

We must act now!  The works to be undertaken for the restoration are enormous.  Many carved stones need to be replaced and whole parts such as the lantern must be taken down and rebuilt.  Despite the different Departmental and Regional aid, the Marie cannot, on its own, find the balance to be committed to complete the budget for the work.  For 10 centuries, our predecessors have deployed their energy and ingenuity to build the church, enlarge it, beautify it and maintain it.  This is the reason why many people from various backgrounds have wished to join forces and commit some time and energy to stop this church from deteriorating.  In addition to fund-raising for the restoration, the Association is seeking to give life to this place through concerts, performances, readings, exhibitions, ....  All volunteers are welcome!

Join us by becoming a member of the Association.  You can also make a donation, however small, or participate in the planned activities.  Don't hesitate!  Come and support us and help this beautiful building to pass, still intact, through many generations to come.
